“God is A Broncos Fan”
As a third generation Coloradan and a 20 year resident of Steamboat Springs, I have seen snow-less days of November before. But that is why we have mountain bikes, hiking boots, and great beer! And as a lifelong Denver Bronco fan and season ticket holder, it sure makes the drive to Denver on Sunday’s a heck of a lot easier! Do you know why sunsets are orange and blue? God is a Bronco’s Fan!
Yampa Valley Heritage
Ok, enough about the Broncos. The ski season is underway this week in Steamboat Springs and the snow will come. My Great Uncle, Loy Ardrey, was the first president of the Yampa Water Conservancy District and a long time rancher in the Yampa Valley. He talked his little brother (my Grandpa) into moving to the Steamboat Springs area in the 1930’s to help on the ranch. Grandpa ran the local fuel station in Yampa, Colorado. One of his jobs was delivering heating oil to the local ranches by a horse-drawn sleigh through the harsh winters of the Yampa Valley. It did not take long for my Grandfather to realize that this was a very hostile environment to live and work in. After several years, he moved the family back to Cheyenne Wells, located in the eastern plains of Colorado. Grandpa was not a skier!
Yampa Valley Curse
Steamboat Springs is a special place! I have bounced around the Great State of Colorado and there is no place like it. They call it the Yampa Valley Curse! It will get you! I am so proud to have some heritage in the Yampa Valley and I love that I can share it with folks that visit us from all over the world. Don’t worry about the snow. There is so much about Steamboat that you will fall in love with. Take a dip in the healing waters of the Old Town Hot Springs or Strawberry Park. See a view of the whole Yampa Valley from the basket of a hot air balloon. Enjoy one of the many wonderful restaurants that have something to offer every palate. Just never forget to be ready for that powder day on Mount Werner.
The most important thing I hope visitors to Steamboat Springs will remember is that it offered a down to earth, friendly hospitality that was truly genuine. Ride um cowboy! Hat and chaps not required.
