Good readers of the Resort Lodging Company blog, it truly is your lucky day as I have been chosen to author this edition. You may very well be asking yourself, “to what do I owe this good fortune?” Perhaps the powers that be have recognized my prowess with the English language, the restrained yet unmistakable creativity that lies beneath this cool demeanor…or that my last name starts with B and blog duty was assigned alphabetically. Regardless, we’re in this together now. A quick glance outside determines that autumn has been unjustifiably extended. A cloudless 65 degree afternoon diminishes any hope of skiing in Steamboat Springs Snow this today….

“He who rides the sea of the Nile must have sails woven of patience.” – William Golding

I don’t think the respectable Mr. Golding ever stared at the barren slopes of a world class ski resort like Mt. Werner for hours on end with such anxious vigilance. Watching…waiting…staring…until Mt. Werner stared back. Unmoving, unperturbed, unobjectionable; a solemn sentinel without peers in the splendid County of Routt.

“I am by nature an optimist and by intellectual conviction a pessimist.” – William Golding

Complaining about the weather is almost as pointless as complaining about hangovers, free but slow wifi, the results of a recent election, other people complaining…or other people complaining about the weather. My time could be better spent raking leaves, watching a South Park marathon, weaving a basket or delaying an overdue blog assignment.

“It’s simpler to believe in a miracle.” – William Golding

In November of 1981, Steamboat received its first snow of the season. A fluffy 8″ inches which promptly melted within 5 days. In December, the resort received 113″. In January, an additional 124″. The season ended in April 1982 with an astounding 383.75 inches of Champagne Powder. At the time, I was a year old and had no comprehension of Colorado, the Simon Says game, who really got my nose, weather patterns or incremental precipitation measurements. But I knew what was fun, I knew what I liked and still do.

“This is our island. It’s a good island. Until the grownups come to fetch us we’ll have fun.” -William Golding

Opening day, November 24th, 2016, I’ll be there. I’ll be holding freshly tuned skis, wearing my new season pass and a dopey smile. My legs will give out after three runs affording me time to hit 5 different Thanksgiving brunch/lunch/dinners before my annual turkey slumber. I’ll have fun. And I guess I’ll be patient.
