Beginner Steamboat Ski Area and Guide

Have you always wanted to try skiing or snowboarding, but never got the chance? Well, your Steamboat Springs vacation is about to change all that! Steamboat Springs is the perfect place for novices to learn and have a great time doing it. From gear rental to lessons with a pro, you’ll feel comfortable getting started here. Let’s get going to the beginning slopes of the Steamboat ski area!

First Things First

If you’re a complete novice, it’s worth going over a few basics. Make sure you have all the proper gear, including snow pants, a helmet, gloves, and eye protection. Yes, you might feel silly wearing all that stuff, but it is all necessary. If you are going to enjoy skiing as a thing to do with kids in Steamboat Springs, this is especially important!

Don’t worry about not having ski gear, though! There are plenty of convenient shops in Steamboat Springs that will make obtaining proper ski gear a breeze, but our favorite is Christy Sports. They take reservations ahead of time online and will also deliver your gear to you and pick it up, if you prefer that convenience. Their pros will be happy to help you get the right fit for your boots and skis, so don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Ski School

When you’re all suited up and ready to go… how exactly do you do that? The answer, of course, is ski school. You may think skiing will be easy, but once you’re standing on the snow in skis, you may feel differently. And no one will get hurt more easily than a beginner who thinks they’re already a pro! So do yourself a favor and invest in a day or two of lessons. This is also important for snowboarders! Just because you may already know how to surf or skateboard does not mean you already know how to snowboard. Take a lesson, fall on your bottom a bunch of times, and before you know it, you’ll be up and riding!

Steamboat Ski Area: Bunny Slopes

Bunny slopes are the affectionate term for novice ski runs, perfect for either beginners or as a thing to do with kids in Steamboat Springs. You’ll want to spend a lot of time on those before you graduate to more challenging stuff! Luckily, Steamboat has lots of great beginner runs to start with. Begin your day close to the bottom of the mountain, on Stampede and Preview, before heading further up to try out longer runs like Right-O-Way, Why Not, and Shortcut. Just keep at it and you’ll be an expert in no time!
