Adding a cultural dimension as well as enriching the lives of the Steamboat community and the Yampa Valley, the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra (SSO) offers both great performances and educational experiences to music lovers of all generations. From its early beginning as a volunteer ensemble of musicians in 1991, this orchestra has grown into a cultural center where professional and renowned musicians perform on a regular basis. And as part of its community outreach, the SSO offers immersion weekends and educational programs that aim to educate and entertain. Many of the orchestra musicians also perform in the community and the surrounding areas as an ensemble.
From Strings to Full Orchestra
For the next 15 years, the SSO was mainly a group of chamber musicians playing mostly strings, with a special focus on the violins. Violins have always been the preferred instrument of the music teachers in Steamboat Springs, and there was no shortage of talents violinists. But in order to develop a more balanced orchestra, other musicians were needed as well. This recruiting endeavor attracted many musicians both from around the area and even across the globe. Once the orchestra found its harmonious team it started offering three concerts every year. One in the spring, another in the fall, and the last one in the holiday season.
A Beehive of Art and Music
In 2013 the Steamboat Springs Arts Council took over the management of the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra with the aim of expanding its engaging activities in the community. As part of that increased presence, notable guest artists and performers of national fame were invited to perform along with poets, photographers, and artists from different organizations across the country. As a result, the SSO became a popular destination for people looking for a cultural night out. Nowadays the SSO has the same kind of professional musicianship typically found in major metropolitan orchestras. This kind of success couldn’t have been achieved without the support of the local community both in attendance levels and donations.
Because the SSO has its roots in the community, it offers educational things to do in Steamboat, CO to people of all ages. These programs run at the same time as the concerts performed throughout the year. You get the chance to learn from resident and visiting musicians offering their skill and techniques.
