A Historic Main Street Steamboat Community with Modern Flair
When Steamboat Springs was founded in at the turn of the 19th century, the Mainstreet Steamboat area served as the lifeblood for the community of the town. Besides being a place to visit the drugstore or market, it also provided an important social environment for residents in down. The old railroad used to run through the area to drop off visitors from near and afar to delight in the hot springs and to explore the untamed wilderness. Many of the buildings standing are well preserved and have historical significance, such as the Tread of Pioneers Museum, which dates back to the early 1900’s, and the F.M. Light & Sons building from the same time period. It began as a retail store showcasing Western wear, like cowboy hats, leather boots and saddles, and the store is still open today and owned by the original owners’ descendants.
Besides getting your historic fix, there are so many outstanding local restaurants, ranging from tacos to Italian food to Pacific-Rim specialties like dumplings and Pad Thai. Visit The Tap House or Mountain Top Brewery if you’re craving a local, ice-cold Colorado brew. If you’re searching for a place to satisfy your sweet tooth, like Powder Day Donuts or the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. For a treat for the kids, visit Fuzziwig’s Candy Emporium! You’ll also find plenty of cute clothing stores, massage studios, art galleries, salons, and coffee shops.
There’s a variety of events that occur downtown, such as guided walking tours, summer music festivals, and a winter carnival. Every year, typically June-September, you can visit a farmer’s market on Saturdays, and take home some delicious ingredients to cook up in your vacation home! You can select from fresh vegetables and meats, freshly baked bread and pies, and homemade jams and syrups. It’s also an excellent place to pick up a handmade gift, as many of our local artists have booths at the farmer’s market! Whatever the season, there’s always something to do in downtown Steamboat Springs.
