Sam Bush | Steamboat Free Concert Series
January 21 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
“I feel fortunate that when it’s time to play, no matter how I feel physically or mentally, once the downbeat starts, my mind goes to a place that’s all music,” says Bush. “The joy of the music comes to me and overtakes me sometimes––I just become part of the music.”
Sam Bush returns to Steamboat to kick off the free concert series for the 18/19 ski season. Sam takes center stage at Gondola Square after the final free-for-all of the Cowboy Downhill. The Father of Newgrass and King of Telluride, the legendary mandolin master has long established himself as bluegrass royalty. A lifetime of channeling his energy has led to stylistic innovations that have changed the course of bluegrass and roots music alike. The sheer ferocity of his playing and the brilliant suppleness, ease and warmth of his vocals have earned him a suite of honors including a “Lifetime Achievement” from the Americana Music Association; four International Bluegrass Music Association “Mandolin Player of the Year” awards, and three Grammys heralding talents from best album to best performance. His most recent album, Storyman, is a freewheeling collection that gleefully picks and chooses from jazz, folk, blues, reggae, country swing, and bluegrass to create a jubilant noise only classifiable as the Sam Bush sound. Revered for both his solo and sideman work, which includes time with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett and Béla Fleck, Sam boasts a bevy of 30 recorded albums.
