Carl’s Tavern in Steamboat is a classic sports bar with a Rocky Mountain twist. Named after Carl Howelson, who brought the exciting new sport of ski jumping with him to Colorado in 1914, Carl’s Tavern aims to take your taste buds to new heights with their flavorful meal and cocktail combinations. Have a few drinks, and fly high with the Flying Norseman!
Come for the Drinks
If you’re any kind of alcohol aficionado, then Carl’s Tavern is an absolute must. None of the bars in Steamboat Springs can boast this variety of whiskey specialties and creative cocktails! There are nearly 20 “Whiskey Flights” to choose from, where you can sample the flavors of true craft whiskey makers from around the world. There are also many delicious craft cocktails to choose from, whether whiskey is your beverage of choice or not. Try a Yampa Street Mule or a Mountain Mai Tai for a flavor of something different! If you prefer beer, there’s also a nice selection of drafts, bottles, and cans to choose from, some of which are locally brewed.
More Than Just a Bar
You may be thinking that even though you really want to try that cocktail, you can’t take your kids to the bars in Steamboat! Never fear, Carl’s Tavern is also a restaurant, and you’ll eat to your heart’s content with a great kids’ menu to choose from as well.
Favorite main dishes at Carl’s include chicken pot pie, pan-seared salmon, and alpine buffalo meatloaf. There are also a nice variety of burgers (with 100% Kobe beef) and sandwiches, including the impressive-sounding ½ pound charred caribou Polish sausage sandwich, all of which come with a side of tavern fries.
There are also some great weekly dinner specials here at Carl’s. Mondays are BBQ chicken, Tuesday is prime rib night, Wednesday is a rib special, and Sunday is chicken-fried steak. All are priced reasonably at $19.95.

If you’re the type of traveler who will not let vacation interfere with catching all your favorite pro football games, not to worry! Carl’s Tavern is just the place to watch your Sunday favorites, while enjoying some amazing drinks, as already mentioned. What hasn’t been mentioned yet is the appetizers, or “Teasers,” as Carl’s likes to call them.
